MOVE OVER PHIL

Punxsutawney Phil, is the prognosticating groundhog that predicts how long the winter will be. As the story goes, if Phil emerges from his hole and sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter, if he doesn’t see his shadow spring will arrive early. Move over Phil there is another game in town, Doug the quahog.

Doug the quahog, was named the official quahog by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce http://www.capecodchamber.org. Doug a resident of Sandwich, made a late afternoon appearance, arriving in a black limousine, on June 21, to predict whether it will be a long and sunny summer on Cape Cod. Security was tight as Dave made his way to the sandy beach to make his prediction. The Prediction: Thirteen weeks of sunny summer weather ahead.

Doug’s prediction kicked off a week of exciting activities; including a stuffed-quahog eating contest, and a quahog-and-spoon race. The week’s activities concludes with the 30th annual WCOD Chowder Fest at the Cape Cod Melody Tent on June 27 http://www.melodytent.org .

Hisory Week on 6A

Stroll along Historic 6A

Even with Time something’s remain unchanged.

This can be said of beautiful Old Kings Highway and the historic district of Yarmouth Port. As you stroll down 6A, you can almost imagine how life evolved starting in the 1600’s with the early the settlers, to the stagecoach and mail service of the 1700’s and shipbuilding and trade in the 1800’s.

Many of the locations on the tour are intricately entwined and share a rich history. One Centre Street http://www.onecentrestreetinn.com/ and the First Congregational Church http://www.fccyarmouth.org/ share a remarkable history.

The inn's original owner was Elisha Doane, known as Squire Doane, who was for a time the wealthiest man in Massachusetts. He owned shares in numerous sailing vessels and operated the Doane Tavern, which is just located a few doors down the road. Upon his death, Squire Doane left the home to the First Congregational Church, at which time it became a parsonage. To keep in the history alive all the rooms at One Centre Street Inn are all named after prominent people who lived in Yarmouth Port during the 1800s.

Please stop by One Centre Street Inn as you enjoy the walking tour of Yarmouth Port on Sunday June 6, 2010, from Noon to 3:00pm.

Other events include: Stories behind the Markers Along 6A (June 3rd at 7:00) held at the Sturgis Library, http://www.sturgislibrary.org/ and an Open House at the Historical Society of Old Yarmouth, http://www.hsoy.org/ (June 5th from Noon to 3pm).

Thoughts of Spring in New England!!

You know spring has arrived when ------

The birds are chirping at 5:00 in the morning;

Your breathe is no longer visible when you take your first step outside in the morning;

The sun starts stretching its’ brilliant orange rays upward from beneath the horizon;

The daffodils and crocuses spread color and beauty along 6A- Old Kings Highway;

And you are rooting for your favorite sports team.

Whether it is the Boston Bruins; http://bostonbruins.com, the Boston Celtics; http://bostonceltics.com, or my personal favorite the Boston Red Sox’s; http://bostonredsox.com, fans have their remote in hand watching the action and refereeing or umpiring each play.

Many of the Boston Red Sox players have acquired their skills when playing for the Cape Cod League; http://www.capecodbaseball.org/, such as Jason Varitek, Kevin Youkilis, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Lowell and Daniel Bard. The Cape Cod League is celebrating its 114th year and it attracts ballplayers from the best programs in the country. A host family provides accommodations for the players, and is a welcome relief from their grueling schedule. The teams have a tremendous following from Bourne to Orleans. One of the premier events of the season is the All Star game July 28th at Fenway Park. http://www.resox.com/capecod . One Centre Street Inn, http://onecentrestreetinn.com/ is fortunate to be located 5 minutes from where the Yarmouth Dennis Team plays their home games, www.ydredsox.org.

The Cape League is just one of the many local attractions. Next Week information on a Week of History on 6A. A week filled with activies in honor of local history.
Saturday night ghost tour and dinner.

Old King's Highway

Captains Row – Historic Old Kings Highway

Although, shipwrecks were a large part of the history of Yarmouth Port, there were many other successful and interesting stories surrounding the ship Captains of Historic Old Kings Highway. As previously mentioned, Asa Eldridge, was well known as an accomplished captain of the clipper ship, Red Jacket, and he also had two brothers that were equally respected, Oliver and John Eldridge.

Captain Oliver Eldridge was Master of the US transport steamer Atlantic and later became the Manager of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company in San Francisco.

In 1843 Captain John Eldridge sailed the Liverpool from New York to Liverpool During the voyage the passengers presented the captain with a silver fruit dish, which today remains in the possession of the family.

Other notable captains were Captain Allen Knowles, who lived across the street from the Eldridge’s, and commanded the ship Puritan to San Francisco and Captain Bangs Hallet, who journeyed to China. The Captain Bangs Hallet House Museum is the only sea captains home that is opened regularly to the public. http://www.hsoy.org/historic/hallethouse.htm . Many of the items purchased from China are on display at the museum, such as silk fabric, porcelain, tea, and costumes from the period. Prominently hanging from the Maritime rooms hangs a painting of the Clipper Ship, The Red Jacket, which was first commanded by ASA Eldridge.

One Centre Street Inn is located in the midst of these seafaring captains’ homes and its rich history. http://www.onecentrestreetinn.com
Spend an afternoon strolling along Old King's Highway while viewing these magnificant homes. Return to One Centre Street for some home baked goodies served on our beautiful 3 season porch.
